Houston International Airport & Expansion
Houston Hobby steadily grew into one of the nation's most popular airports and quickly outgrew its limited "municipal" designation with its first international flight. In 1950, Pan American Airways flew those inaugural routes from Houston Airport and Mexico City. In 1954, as international flights continued to grow, the name of the airport was changed to Houston International Airport from the Houston Municipal Airport. Throughout the 1950s, the Houston, TX airport was expanded and reconstructed. By 1957, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines had regularly scheduled flights between Houston, Texas, and Amsterdam. Later improvements came to the airport to lengthen the runways for the larger jets.
Houston Hobby Airport History
In 1967, Houston International Airport was given yet another name and the one that would stick. This time, in honor of William P. Hobby, a celebrated former Texas governor from 1917-1920 and lieutenant governor of the great state of Texas from 1914-1917.
Then throughout the 1970s, many airlines like Braniff and Texas International Airlines no longer flew out of Houston Hobby Airport. In 1978, the only commercial carrier flying out of the Houston international airport was Southwest Airlines.
